I made a color sorting activity that we did in an outdoor center today. I used landscaping rocks for this activity but you can also use river rocks which can be purchased at places such as menards and lowes.
I painted the top of the rocks with white acrylic paint (non-toxic) and let them dry and then painted another color on top of the white paint. I used seven different colors for our color sort but you can use more or less if you wish.
I placed the rocks in baskets and the children sorted them by color and then counted how many were in each color group.
